Utilize Chicken's Versatility

By KC Kudra

Chickens have been domesticated to provide eggs and meat since before 1400 BC. The Chinese raised them for generations. The Polynesians brought these useful birds with them to Chile in the 1300s. Since then, the chicken has become a worldwide food staple. They are easy to raise and provide nutritious protein... oh, and they provide one of the most versatile meats in the world.

Almost every cuisine in the world uses chicken in some way. Italy, England, China, France, and South America... the list is endless. Mild flavored and low in cholesterol, chicken is less expensive than other meats and can be used in numerous ways to create delicious, healthy meals.

What Kind of Chicken is found at the Market?

At the market, you can find whole chickens, cut up fryers, or portions like all thighs, all breasts, all wings, or all drumsticks. You can even find small tubs of chicken livers or gizzards if you like them. You can find chicken with the bone left in and boneless chicken. With all these choices, a home cook has many options for easy meals.

It is less expensive to purchase whole birds than to select a package of breast meat. Meat that is less expensive when purchased as a whole portion. If you are not sure how to cut up a chicken, or you just do not have the time, choose one of the packages where this has already been done for you.

What Can You Do With Chicken?

Roast a whole chicken and make it into soup the day after. If you have chicken pieces, make fried chicken, fricassee, a hearty stew or throw it in the oven. Boneless chicken can be eaten in large pieces or cut up small for pot pie, pasta, stir-fry, or sauts. Chicken baked recipes are easy options... just coat your chicken in breadcrumbs, crushed cereal or crackers and pop it in.

Chicken can be used in Italian dishes like chicken cacciatore, French dishes like coq au vin, or Indian dishes like a curry. Asian dishes like lemon chicken, drunken chicken, and others add a taste of the exotic to your everyday fare. Make chicken tacos or add it to a quesadilla. In addition, of course, each cuisine also has chicken soup varieties to try as well.

Chicken also offers the choice of white or dark meat. Each type has a different texture, and they can be used to good effect in different meals. Dark meat is more forgiving... it does not dry out as easily as white meat. It also sops up flavors well from sauces and marinades. White meat is better for cubing and works well in stews, sandwiches and on the barbecue.

The chicken gives us quite a bit to be thankful for. Low in fat and cholesterol, it helps us stay healthy. It is easily digested, even when we are sick. It is suitable for just about any cuisine you may want to try. Chicken is the ultimate versatile food. Soup made with chicken has even been proven to help us get better when we are sick. The little chicken has given us quite a lot. - 15266
