I will never forget the face of the ironmonger in Exeter when I went in many years ago to ask for a suckering iron. I had never heard of such a tool, and yet at that time it was possible to buy them from ironmongers in Maidstone, Kent, without any difficulty at all.
With tall standard trees it is sometimes convenient to be able to cut off small branches when standing at ground level.
With its narrow curved blade the saw fits very nicely into 'tight' spots. For the ordinary garden there is much to be said for the double- edged straight blade pruning saw, which can be bought in three sizes again, i.e. 14 inch, 16 inch and 18 inch. The bottom blade has U- shaped teeth which rip through the branch very quickly, and the top edge has fine teeth which are extremely useful for sawing the underneath of a branch so as to prevent it from cracking or tearing the bark down with its weight.
The simplest hand machine to use for spraying trees is the Solo, which costs approximately $ 4. It has a double-pumping action and if the screw is removed inside the nozzle it will send a jet up to a height of 30 feet or so. Normally, however, it is used with the screw in position and provides, in consequence, a fine spray with a good coverage.
These long-armed pruners are sold in different lengths: 5, 6, 7, 8 9, 10, 12 and 14 feet. The blades can be bought separately, should the original blade get damaged or become worn out.
Those who don't want to carry buckets about may buy as an alternative a knapsack sprayer with a capacity of 3+ gallons. This is strapped on to the back and has fitted to it a 42-inch length of spraying hose, plus a delivery lance with tap. The end of this lance is fitted with two nozzles, out of which the spray comes and gives a good coverage. - 15266
