By Robert M Freeman

Barcelona is a place that is unlike any other in Spain, and for that reason in all of Europe. Spending holidays in Barcelona would leave you with a very revitalizing experience. It offers a change from the usual pace of your life to a change that is absolutely wonderful. Barcelona is exceptionally beautiful and offers a lot of enjoyment. You would experience as if the city comes to life at night-time.

In Barcelona, you'll be able to find fine examples of both Gothic and Romanesque architecture. The most unifying theme of the city of Barcelona is Antoni Gaudi which has a very capricious architecture. If you wish to indulge into the true spirit of Barcelona, try to walk by La Rambla which is a splendid street lined with trees. Throughout your stroll, you could also revisit the history and traditions for which Barcelona is so famous.

You'll find a lot of different things on your way from books and jewellery to a large number of tourists and street performers. The street life is very vibrant and the atmosphere is very pleasant.

There are also paved streets in the Barri Gotic and there are medieval buildings, and the entire area shows an exotic feeling. The area also has a lot of restaurants that are very fine, and the food offered is of very high quality and delicious. For those who are Picasso admirers, there are his early works in the museum which provide a true understanding to his works and also to the artist himself.

There is also Edifici Frum which holds an exhibition of the urban transformation that took place in Barcelona. The highlight in the place is a model of the city which is very detailed, and its creation took twenty thousand hours. It is acclaimed as the biggest model of its kind in all of Europe.

Bellesguard is a sight that should not be missed, and is constructed in a Gaudi fashion. The uncovered bricks and wrought iron give it a fairy tale look. You should also see the Casa de l'Ardiaca where there are many of the city's collections. Its yard is merely peaceful, and was refurbished in the year 1902. It was in fact built in the sixteenth century.

There is also the very interesting House of spikes, Casa de les Punxes that is like a neo Gothic fantasy. It has turrets that are pointed and that has it nicknamed as the House of Spikes. There is also the Edifici de Gas Natural which is a waterfront tower, and has shimmering mirror like surface.

If you want to see more of Gothic architecture, you should go to Catedral which is famous for its gothic interior that is very powerful. It also has an irregular cloister that is Romanesque. Centre de Cultura Contempornia de Barcelona is adored by the people of the city and holds different exhibitions, and is a centre that is used for multi cultural purposes. - 15266

Soy Bean

By Amy Paul

Licorice grows wild in southern Europe, the Middle East, Asia Minor and Afghanistan, and is raised commercially in the former USSR, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and elsewhere.

From then on, however, its spread was rapid and nowadays it is the most widely grown of all leguminous plants, being raised over huge areas of arable land. The seeds contain a great deal of protein (40%), similar in composition to that of meat, and are thus a very nutritious food.

The seeds yield an oil used in pastry making and liqueurs promoting digestion, and are used by the pharmaceutical industry in the preparation of gargles.

In the Middle Ages fennel had all sorts of uses. The fruits were used to flavour sweets, fish sauces and soups. It was recommended for the treatment of cataracts, worms in the cars, and to promote the flow of milk from the breast. The following recipe is for 'cold brewit': 'take mush made from almonds, dry it on a cloth and when dry put it in a vessel; to this add salt, sugar, the white powder of ginger and juice from fennel.

Cultivated forms differ in the colour of their seeds. In regions where soy bean is grown on a large scale the proteins arc extracted from the beans and made up into various kinds of synthetic meat products.

The seeds do not ripen at the same time; a single plant carries them at various stages of development. For this reason they arc harvested in succession by cutting out only the ripe sections of the umbels. These ;Ire then spread out and dried slowly on large sheets of canvas to retain the seeds, which separate readily from the stalks. The temperature must not exceed 35C (95F) - 15266

Tips on Garden Design

By Jason Flinstone

An assessment of the garden in history, however brief, cannot ignore the pervasive influence of oriental garden design. Gardening was a craft in China in ancient times and it crossed the sea to Japan in the seventh century All to develop into a distinctive style of its own, which continues basically unchanged to this clay.

At the other extreme there was also the tradition of the cottager's garden, used for growing vegetables and for keeping a pig and a few chickens. Today the situation is very different: the twentieth century has brought increased leisure, while gardens have become smaller and available to many more people. The interest in gardening continues to grow but is, nevertheless, only one of many demands on our leisure time. It is therefore important that a garden is well designed from the outset, with the owner's requirements taken into consideration, so that it can be safely left to mature in the way it was planned without needing constant attention.

In this context it is often easier to define style in a negative way: concrete slabs, for instance, lack the subtlety and texture needed for paving a cottage garden, and asbestos pots would he out of character in the garden of a traditional brick house.

A good garden plan not only demonstrate the enormous range of needs and activities which can be catered for within such a limited space, they also show how a design based on individual needs will transform the same basic plot into a unique, well planned garden.

All materials, to a degree, dictate how they should be used. In planning your garden try above all to avoid mixing materials and styles as it is rarely successful. Plants too have very definite characteristics and the selection of them will certainly influence the overall look of the garden. But the choice of materials must come first when establishing the layout and basic style. With a small garden, he aware of the limitations of your plot. The challenge is to achieve the desired effect within narrow boundaries, always hearing in mind that a visual link between the house and the garden is of great importance.

Once the fundamental style of you: garden has emerged, from a consideration of building materials and the interior look of your house, from then on each individual's garden is unique. Its character grows partly out of practical solutions to practical problems and relates also to the specific functions the garden is expected to perform. At a later stage planting will course flesh out the bones of your garden and give it finally a very particular feel. - 15266

Grape Vine

By John Piano

The first vintners were probably the ancient Armenians, who fermented the fruit of the wild grape vine way back in the early Stone Age (between the tenth and eighth millennium B.C.).

In Europe it was the Greeks who first cultivated the grape and introduced it in the 7th century B.C. to Italy and the territory that is now France. Its cultivation in America dates from the 16th century A.D.

Nowadays, it is raised not only in Mexico but elsewhere, chiefly in Madagascar, for it can be pollinated by artificial means. It is propagated by cuttings and trained up artificial supports or small trees. It begins to bear fruits in the third year. These are 16-to 30-cm-(6- to 12-in-) long pod ;like capsules (known as vanilla pods) which are harvested while still immature so they do not burst.

First of all they are scalded briefly with hot water and then submitted to the lengthy process of wilting and drying, during which they turn a dark colour and acquire their characteristic aroma. Good quality vanilla is supple and small crystals of fragrant vanillin are visible on the surface. Vanilla must be stored in an air-tight wrapper or container to preserve its aroma.

In England ginger has been a traditional spice since the 9th century, but Europeans were not acquainted with the plant itself until the late 13th century when it was described at almost the same time by both Marco Polo and Pagolotti. In the 16th century Francisco de Mendoza of Spain began cultivating ginger in Jamaica. Chief producers nowadays are Jamaica, southeast India, tropical west Africa and China.

Ginger is propagated by vegetative means, by cutting the rootstock into pieces and planting these out in light and moisture-retaining soil. It is harvested (ploughed up) 6 to 12 months later - 15266

Purslane

By Matthew Cook

This is a climbing perennial plant native to the islands of Java, Sumatra and Borneo. It is grown on trees which shade plantations of other plants from the tropical sun. Of all the peppers used in cookery this is the most aromatic, which accounts, perhaps, for its lack of popularity in Europe.

In the Middle Ages it was a very popular plant in Europe, particularly in England during the reign of Elizabeth I. Its uses are many. The fleshy leaves may be cooked and eaten like spinach. In France it is used to make an excellent, vitamin-rich, green salad and in the Middle East it is a common ingredient of mixed salads called lattoush'.

According to old English recipes the leaves may be pickled like capers. They may be used as a delicate flavouring in creamed vegetable soups and in piquant mayonnaises served with meat and fish. When using purslane in cooked foods the finely chopped leaves should be added at the end of cooking to retain their delicate flavour and precious vitamins.

Besides being far more pungent, pepper cubeb is also morphologically different from black pepper and long pepper. Though the fruits (berries) resemble those of black pepper they appear to have long stalks (these stalks arc actually elongated ovaries). They are harvested before they ripen so that the surface becomes wrinkled during the drying process.

The strong biting quality of cubeb is not caused by piperine, as in black pepper, but by cubebine and by the large amount of essential oil they contain (as much as 12% whereas black pepper contains 4% at the most).

For this reason it is recommended to buy peppers whole, not ground, and to grind them just before use. - 15266

Tips on Garden Drainage System

By Scott Edward

If you have taken over a new site and form of drainage is definitely needed, will at least provide an excellent opportunity to get rid of any builder's which you have inherited. Broken lumps of concrete should be used the bottom of drainage pits or trenches. The drainage systems is also useful to take the iorterflow and occasional outlet from a small garden pond.

It is important for a gardener to know about the water table. This is the under the topsoil or subsoil, depend on the depth of these layers, to w water standing in the earth's crust rises. is not a horizontal line but confo roughly to the contours of the ground.

The water table generally rises and fa following wet and dry periods. If it star, at about 900 mm (3 ft) below ground le-. it can he an asset, since water will - available to the deeper plant roots. Ho ever extreme fluctuations in the water tai are a great danger: if it rises in winter: roots of plants are killed through saturatic and if it falls in the summer the pla suffer from drought. On low-lying grout if there is perpetual standing water (usua in winter), this might mean that the war table has risen above ground level and drainage system will relieve it.

Compost can be regarded as sufficiently decayed when the individual components can no longer be distinguished. It should be a crumbly, manure-like mass, dark in colour; if the texture is slimy the heap has not been made up correctly. In warm weather, and given the right conditions, the waste will take only about two to three months to decay but in winter you can expect it to take about four to six months. Artificial or inorganic fertilizers are concentrated chemical salts from natural underground deposits. They are available in liquid or powder form and supply essential foods direct to the plants, acting quickly when applied to moist soils; it is important to use the exact quantity stated and to distribute it as evenly as possible, as overdoses can be harmful. Fertilizers are available containing individual chemi- cals or you can buy a general one which combines the three main nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).

This channel should obviously run to some form of outlet such as a soakawayon no account allow your excess water to drain on to neighbours' property. The disadvantage of a rubble drain is that it becomes blocked comparatively quickly as soil leaches through from above.

If you have space, a double compost bin allows one heap to decompose thoroughly while another is being started. - 15266

Alpenrose

By Mark Carlson

The white dogwood is a widespreading, sparsely branched shrub with drooping twigs, growing to a height of 2-3 m. The twigs are bright red, in more heavily shaded locations yellow. The buds resemble those of the red dogwood, but are somewhat larger. The white flowers appear in May and June, the fruits ripen in September. The hard seed is flattened, ovate.

This shrub is a native of eastern Europe and Siberia, its range extending eastward to northern China and Korea. In this arm it grows mainly in the valleys of large rivers, where it can be one of the main species in the shrub layer of riverine woods. In central and western Europe it is planted in parks as a shrub beneath groups of trees.

Both the red twigs and white fruits are very ornamental. A completely frost-resistant species, it tolerates shade and the smoke-laden atmosphere of large cities. Propagation is by suckers and cuttings. Also planted in parks is the closely related species Cornus stoloniferaMichx. (C. sericea. L.) of America, which is readily propagated by means of the drooping branches which take root easily. This dogwood has white flowers and small, round, white drupes containing a single, hard, ribbed seed.

The common privet is an upright, densely branched shrub 1-4 m high. One-year shoots are erect, arching and grey. The brown, ovate buds are often suboppositc and are borne on prominent peg-like projections. The white flowers appear in June. The fruits ripen in September and remain on the shrub until late in winter.

This is a warmth-loving species growing mostly in southern Europe and Asia Minor. In central Europe it exists as a relic of the warm period following the Ice Age, growing in warm, mainly limestone situations. It occurs on sunny and rocky banks or in oak stands. It thrives quite well in dry locations but requires lighter soil rich in humus.

Propagation is by means of seeds and root cuttings. The leaves turn a bright red in autumn. The wood is hard and reddish. - 15266

Shrub Flowers Information

By James Masonry

Flowers may be classified according to whether they possess both or only one (or none) of the sexual organs.

The flowers of seed plants are actually leaves modified for reproduction. In the full-petalled flower it is possible to distinguish four different sets of modified leaves: the calyx, corolla, stamens (male sexual organs) and pistil (female sexual organ).

The nut is a hard-shelled fruit with a woody wall not connected with the seed, e.g. that of the hazel and smoke tree. The legume or pod is a one-celled, flattened, usually elongate fruit, splitting along the margins when ripe, with several seeds inside, e.g. the golden rain, pea tree and common broom.

Monoecious shrubs are ones with both staminate and pistillate flowers on the same individual, e.g. hazel, green alder, etc., whereas dioecious shrubs have staminate and pistillate flowers on different individuals, e.g. mistletoe, sea buckthorn, willow, etc.

The flowers of trees and shrubs are rarely single blooms. As a rule they are borne in clusters of various shapes and sizes.

Another fleshy fruit is the berry, with a thin membranous covering and fleshy middle and inner layer with usually several seeds embedded in the pulpy mass, e.g. the currant, privet, common elder. Accessory fruits include the pome and the hip. The pome develops from the fusion of the fleshy receptacle and ovary wall. It is a fleshy fruit consisting of a central core containing several seeds and an outer thickened fleshy layer. Examples are the cotoneaster, hawthorn, quince, medlar and crab apple. The hip is a multiple fruit consisting of a fleshy hollow receptacle enclosing several achenes. - 15266

The Development of Garden in Middle Ages

By Christina Courtney

The Moorish garden in Spain generally consisted of several courtyards, known as patios, with water as the connecting link. Many patios contained a long canal with a zemral fountain and there were tiled walls and floors.

During the sixteenth century the initiative passed to Rome, where the architect Bramante designed a papal garden within the Vatican. This was the forerunner of the High Renaissance style, with a magnificent arrangement of steps and terraces, which became a prototype for everything which followed. From then on gardens became even more ostentatious in design, with terraces at different levels retained by walls and interconnected by grand staircases. Water again became a major feature, as it was in Islamic gardens. It was pressurized and used spectacularly, progressing down an incline or displayed in an elaborate fountain. While these Renaissance gardens were still places for cool retreat, with shade and water of great importance, they were also showplaces where the site and its vegetation were deliberately manipulated. The Italians were really the first to make decorative use of plants, with hedges, for example, used to link the house and garden structurally. The Renaissance movement originating in Italy spread northwards, together with increased knowledge about plants and their cultivation. In France the small formal gardens within the walls of mowed chateaux moved outside, becoming much grander in scope.

Unlike the Italian hillside gardens, the French ones were flat and straight, most of them situated in the fiat marshy areas to the south and west of Paris. The style was still very geometric, as the original pattern of formal beds within a grid system of paths was simply repeated in order to enlarge the garden.

The Romans put into practice what the Greeks wrote but the Roman garden was brought into the centre of the house, becoming an even more important part Of domestic life. We know of the ground pattern of early Roman town houses from excavations at Pompeii and villas elsewhere, and of their garden design from the letters of Pliny the younger.

The English term 'knot garden' refers to the style of flower beds which now evolved. They were small, usually raised, and laid Out in geometric patterns, edged with dwarf clipped shrubs such as box or thrift or with a herb like rosemary.

The Romans carried vegetable growing much further in their country homes because it was the main form of sustenance for rich and poor alike. Salad crops were grown and cabbage was said to be the favourite vegetable. Cato also wrote of turnips, beans, garlic, asparagus and radishes and later writers added carrots, onions, peas, lettuce, chicory, parsley, fennel, parsnips and melons. When the Romans went as conquerors to Europe, they introduced various plants, vegetables and fruit to different countries, together with their knowledge of agriculture and horticulture. - 15266

Zinc oxide stays on even when it gets wet to continue to protect your skin. The mineral zinc is also found in homeopathic medicines and is a natural healing agent for the body.

4. Iron Oxides - We want natural makeup but a little color doesn't hurt things. Iron oxide comes in a variety of pigments. These colors can be used in subtle measure to shade foundations for all skin types. Brighter pigments are useful for eye shadows and blush.

5. Silica - Oily skin is a problem for many people. Silica adds a silky finish to the skin as well as sopping up excess skin oil that can make your face shine. The powdered silica reduces the appearance of pores and those fine lines we wish were finer and less visible.

Growing Herbs

By Jesse Charlotte

In Europe people still use imported dried herbs and spices far more often than fresh herbs. This is perhaps due to the once prevalent convention that the extravagant use of pepper, saffron and other costly spices from the East is the mark of a lavish cuisine and a high-class upbringing. However, home-grown herbs can substitute some of those imported from the Orient. All you need is a small space in the garden about 2 m (6 ft) square, but even without a garden herbs can be grown in pots on the windowsill.

If you have an excessive secretion of gastric juices you should not use herbs that stimulate their flow. Similarly it is nolt advised to drink strong coffee or tea before going to bed for they stimulate the activity of the cerebral cortex, the heart, the vascular system and respiration. Wise and moderate use of herbs, however, acts, as a medicine rather than a poison. Why just take a look into the past: at one time no difference was made between culinary and medicinal herbs and predecessor of our present-day herb garden is the medieval chortus sanitatis', or garden of health.

As herbs do not need to be grown in large quantities there is no need to have more than two or three plants of each species. The selection is wide and so the choice is up to you - choose what you want according to your own tastes and needs. Every collection, however, should include such herbs as chives, chervil, southernwood, tarragon, hyssop, lovage, marjoram, basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, savory and sage. However one can just as well grow all species of onion, celery, chamomile, wormwood, marigold, sweet pepper, caraway, costmary, coriander, rocket, fennel, lavender, garden cress, mint, watercress, nigella, poppy, purslane, radish, mustard or fenugreek.

On the contrary, it is recommended to prepare cheese spreads, herb butter, salad dressings, cold sauces and the like at least an hour before serving so that the ingredients will blend thoroughly and the flavour will be at its peak.

The soil must provide the plants with all the necessary nutrients, it must be moisture retentive so the plants do not dry out but at the same time must be well aerated to permit oxygen to reach the roots. Sandy soils that lack humus and retain neither nutrients nor water are as unsuitable as heavy clay soils that have very poor drainage, retain large amounts of water and prevent the passage of air to the roots. Before planting, prepare the soil by adding humus in the form of leaf mould, rotted turves, well rotted manure or garden compost.

Exceptions to the rule are dishes made of minced meat, pts and stuffings where the herbs are thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients and thus protected by the mixture during cooking. Instead of the essential oils being carried off with the water vapour they dissolve in the fats present in the mixture. - 15266

Make Your Own Masterpiece With Dried Flowers

By Thomas Fryd

BY modern methods, the flowers for our winter bouquets may be dried throughout their growing periods. Not only will they provide out of season enjoyment, but they can vie at any season with fresh blooms and they will hold their own on the show table, too.

The processes by which the flowers are dried is not difficult, but patience and careful handling are required. The first step is to assemble the necessary materials and prepare a work area which is dry, yet well ventilated.

All of the flowers we will discuss will be dried in an old fashion mixture of 2/3 powdered borax and 1/3 dry, sifted sand. A practical quantity for the average drying box would be four pounds of borax, thoroughly mixed with 3 and 1/3 cups of sand. This mixture does not deteriorate and an occasional sifting will keep it usable year after year.

For some flowers, wires (available in 18-inch lengths from the florist) are used to substitute for the natural stems or to extend stems which are too short. When wrapped with green or brown corsage tape they are seldom obvious and their pliability is an advantage in making the arrangement. Twenty-three gauge wires are medium strength and will support most flowers.

Camel's hair or sable brushes are convenient for grooming all materials. Cotton batting or florist's shredded waxed paper help to protect fragile flowers during the storage period. A creamy white adhesive, such as Elmer's Glue which will not stain the flowers, is recommended for reinforcing petals which fall easily, and toothpicks make satisfactory applicators for this operation.

Broad-petaled flowers will absorb moisture from the air after they have been dried, so it is wise to protect them from humidity until the atmosphere is dry enough to expose them in arrangements. For this storage period I recommend the use of some drying agent like you find in packaged materials to battle humidity. We all like to admire and exhibit our handiwork from time to time so, after placing the dried flowers in the box on a thin layer of cotton (or shredded waxed paper), I prefer to wrap the coverless box with Saranwrap plus it is transparent.

How to Start

The preliminary treatment of all the flowers discussed is all the same. Gather flowers at the height of their beauty after the morning dew had evaporated from their petals. After removing all but 1/2 inch of natural stem, each is given a substitute stem by inserting a wire through the exact center of the calyx, running it from the face of the flower to the back. Before pulling it down through the flower, 1/4 inch a hairpin hook was formed at the upper end. Then, as the wire stem was carefully pulled downward the hook fastened itself into the flower's center so that it was invisible, yet firmly anchored.

Each flower's characteristic form dictates the special handling that may be necessary to preserve it, as well as its color. Clematis hybrids, for instance, are apt to fall apart, so their petals are secured to their calyxes before drying by the application of tiny dabs Elmer's Glue on their under-sides. After the adhesive was thoroughly dry (a matter of minutes) they are ready for the drying box.

Their flat form, with slightly overlapping petals, indicates that they may be dried upside down with a sprinkling of borax mixture beneath them and a generous covering of the mixture over them. The weight of the sand holds them firmly in place so that the wire "stems" stand upright.

At the end of five days they were carefully removed from the box and the wires stuck in a block of Styrofoam to prevent crushing of the petals) until they could conveniently be packed in the storage box. When stored, the wires were bent so that the flowers could be laid flat upon their soft padding, beneath which were strewn a scant handful of drying crystals.

Daffodils, with their deep or frilly cups, were placed in the drying box with their faces up. This was easily accomplished by manipulating the wire "stems." The borax mixture was gently worked between the perianth segments and into the cups. They dried quickly and were ready in three days.

Roses, when dried by the old- fashioned upside-down hanging method do not fall apart, but the considerable shrinkage and uniformity of size detract from their beauty in arrangements. By the borax mixture method their lovely curves and smooth texture were preserved and the results were well worth the extra precaution of glueing the petals to their calyxes before drying.

The natural stems were left on the roses. To prevent the petals from being flat on one side, a 4 inch strip of cardboard (as long as the width of the drying box) was cut and folded in half, lengthwise, to form a free-standing ridge. At intervals of four inches, small nicks were cut in the fold to support the necks of the flowers so that the round forms were elevated above the floor of the box. As previously described, the flowers were covered with borax mixture, a few grains being carefully fluffed in between the overlapping petals. They were removed on the fifth day, when the outer petals felt like taffeta to the touch.

Marigolds were easily handled with wires to replace their natural stems, although this was a matter of personal preference. They do not shatter, so no adhesive was needed. They were placed in the drying box in the manner described for roses and were ready in five days.

Queen Anne's lace was wired before drying and placed in the borax mixture flat, with wires protruding, in the same manner as the clematis. It was dry in five days. The Hogarth line of silver lace vine was "set" in the drying box before the borax mixture was gently added to cover - it was ready for the arrangement in three days.

Preserving Foliage

Foliage and ferns compliment any cut flower or gladiolus flowers and usually define the design in the arrangement. These are easily preserved and will last almost indefinitely. How to succeed with flower arrangements requires utmost attention even on minute details. The ferns were brushed with peanut oil (any non-salty oil would do) and then pressed between layers of newspaper with a weight on top. They were removed from the press after three weeks.

Aucuba, scotch broom, laurel and beech leaves were all preserved in a well mixed solution of 1/3 glycerin and 2/3 water. The solution was heated to about 110 degrees to hasten its course through the branches. The aucuba, which turned almost black, was ready in about ten days. Scotch broom took only three days and can be easily molded into a crescent curve and added with marigolds. Laurel took about ten days, but sagged a little so that the branches are hung upside down for several more days to permit the glycerin solution, already in the stems, to continue its course and give more stability to the extreme leaves. The beech leaves shown with the marigolds were left in the solution for complete absorption, which took approximately a week; this length of time gave them a rich, golden brown color. However, they could have been removed at the end of three days while they were still green, but already well-preserved.

We use containers for the clematis, marigold and daffodil arrangements filled with floral clay to reach the rims of the containers so that stems would be held firmly in place. Once you have materials dried and ready to design your master piece - now comes the fun part. The design process - all that is left is your imagination. - 15266

Improve Your Running Speed

By Charlie Reese

Improving running speed can be one of the most elusive and difficult skills to work on in sports. The problem is that once you improve running speed to a certain point, sometimes it seems to plateau. You can always work on kicking, passing, shooting, dribbling, or whatever other skills your sport needs, but sometimes it feels like you can not get any faster. Nevertheless, doing the right workouts to improve running speed really can make a difference even when you seem stuck.

The key to improving running speed is to understand the different kinds of speed. Many people think about speed of running as the maximum speed you can attain, while others view it as a measure of how far you can travel in a certain amount of time.

Neither of these is quite accurate. You see, there are different types of speed. There is explosive speed " how quickly you can get moving from a dead stop. There's maximum sprinting speed " the fastest speed you can attain for a short distance. And then of course, there is speed as it relates to your game " how quickly you can move down the field, across the court, or what have you.

The key to learning to improve running speed is to establish benchmarks for several different kinds of speed. Then, target everything at once. The harder you work your body, after all, the faster you will be able to run. If you keep your body surprised, you won't fall into comfortable routines that can cut down on the effectiveness of your workout. That means that one moment you should do a drill to improve sprinting speed and then, immediately afterwards, work on a long-distance running drill. Another day, do things in exactly the opposite order. Practice starts and stops, cuts and dives, and anything else you might need. Never give up and never fall into a comfortable routine, but always cover all the basics.

Some drills to improve running speed involved resistance training while running. Different coaches have different opinions on how well this works, but in my experience it seems to be pretty effective. It can involve anything from running with hand weights or extra clothing on to carrying one of your teammates around the field. It makes you work harder, which will develop your muscles more quickly. You learn to do the same body movements that you normally do running while carrying something heavy with you. That way, when you run unencumbered you will be able to go faster. - 15266

Parsley

By Jason Ledger

In ancient Greece parsley was believed to be sacred and the symbol of fame and joy. It could not possibly be used for such a plebeian purpose as food when it adorned the head of the great Heracles on ceremonial occasions. This belief fell into oblivion but the custom of using it as decoration has been retained to this day, albeit in somewhat different form.

The fresh leaves of the curly variety are used to decorate window displays by butchers and fishmongers. Parsley did not become a culinary herb until the Middle Ages when Charlemagne had it raised in his vegetable gardens, after which it rapidly became an essential part of all vegetable dishes. It reached England in the 16th century and was brought to America by the settlers.

The reason is simple - the fresh fruits are inedible because of their unpleasant bitter flavour. This hitter flavour disappears only after lengthy immersion in water that is changed repeatedly, or after pickling in brine for several months. How and when this treatment was discovered we do not know, nor do we know whether our taste was enriched by chance or by man's ingenuity.

Pickled green olives are prepared from unripe fruits, black olives from ripe fruits. Both may he added to cold hors d'ceuvres and salads, as well as to hot dishes, mainly to roast poultry, cooked vegetables and Italian pizza. Not only the pickled olives but also the fine oil obtained by pressing the ripe fruits is a flavouring. It is yellowish to greenish and has a very delicate flavour and aroma.

Put a few drops on a salad of fresh green peppers or tomatoes, close your eyes, and it does not take much to imagine you are by the warm Mediterranean Sea. It is particularly good mixed with wine vinegar or lemon juice, but the addition of other herbs would only spoil the illusion.

Two types are cultivated: the one for its curly leaves, used for flavouring and as a garnish, the other for its fleshy root, commonly used as a vegetable. In the autumn the plants may be put in pots, thus ensuring a continual supply of fresh leaves, rich in Vitamin C, throughout the winter. As cooking destroys vitamins it is recommended to add the chopped leaves just before serving - 15266

Dog Rose

By Jimmy Huett

Sumach herb is a shrub up to 3 in (10 ft) high growing wild in the Mediterranean region and southeast Asia on stony banks high up above the seashore. It is grown for its sour fruits in southern Italy and Sicily.

The wild species are native to that land and the number of Chinese varieties is enormous. Even older, by a thousand years, are the inscriptions on a tablet of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, where the radish (surmaia) is listed together with various other vegetables. Either is was introduced from here to China or else the Chinese began cultivating it on their own, independent of the Egyptians. Radish is also mentioned by Dioscorides in connection with its use in medicine.

Until recently there was no doubt that the predecessor of the present-day radish was Raphanus sativus, the oldest wild species of the genus, but now many authorities are proving that today's radishes are derived from another wild species of the same genus, namely R. raphanistrum. Be it as it may, the present selection of radishes includes many forms differing in size, colour and shape. All, however, have a pleasant flavour, pungent in some and less so in others, for which reason they are classed as a seasoning.

They are used sliced on bread and butter, chopped or grated in salads and as an accompaniment to cheeses and salamis. They arc best eaten raw. Radishes are wholesome, for besides mustard oil they contain Vitamins B and C and many mineral substances.

The juice is used to flavour salads and the powder in various dishes, mainly fish. Sumach herb may also be used with stewed poultry, vegetables and roast meat. Because of its high tannin content sumach is a suitable ingredient in fatty foods, promoting digestion and checking diarrhoea.

Nowadays the hips are used by the pharmaceutical industry primarily as a source of Vitamin C. The hips of the ramanas rose (Rosa rugosa), which are much larger, arc used for the same purposes - 15266

Planting Garden Plants

By Marley Einstein

The factors that most influence the ways in which a plant develops in a garden are the plant's hardiness, and the site and the aspect of the garden - that is, the amount of shade and the possibility of physical damage by wind if no support is provided.

First, draw up a simple scale plan of the garden or border to be planted. On this outline plan draw circles to represent plants to be planted. At the back large circles will show where large plants will go, medium sized circles will go in the centre, and small ones at the front. Make sure that the circles are drawn to scale and that they cover the whole of the area of the plan to be planted.

When you are choosing plants, you must consider the micro-climate of the site. Does your garden face the morning sun, in which ease overnight frosts will clear more quickly and it will soon warm up, or does it receive sun in the afternoon? Is it in a frost pocket, where the plants will be subjected to more frosts than gardens only a short distance away? Is the garden sheltered by nearby buildings? Do these buildings funnel cold winds or are there windbreaks that will protect all or part of the garden? Wind intensifies the effects of cold by driving it at greater force into the tissue of the plant, and evergreens suffer most in this respect.

All these factors affect the amount of time a plant is exposed to levels of cold that can cause damage to the stem, foliage or, less often, the roots. In the directory each entry includes a minimum temperature that can be tolerated by any plant. If a plant is particularly prone to damage by spring frosts - as are hydrangeas and pieris.

For a single plant dig a hole lm (about 3ft) across, first removing the topsoil and, if necessary, turf to a depth of 25cm (10in) and storing this on a board alongside the hole. Then the lower 25cm (loin) - more if you can - should be dug over and a good quantity of organic material added. Add some more organic material to the removed topsoil before it is returned to the planting hole.

Take the heights, spreads and the colours of foliage and flowers inte account and group and position the plants according to their expected performance in the garden. The picture will slowly emerge, and you will be able to add the finishing touches, allowing each plant and its companions to have their own spaces. As a reminder, you may wish to make a note on the plan of details of cultivation, particularly pruning, to help you while the plants mature. - 15266

Methods In Which Consumers May Reduce Back Pain

By Chris Channing

Back pain is quite a common ailment affecting consumer all around the world in record numbers. Labor intensive jobs, bad genetics, or developing diseases may all lead to a very hard to cure pain. But with the latest in health innovations, consumers have a choice in how they are able to relieve their back pain according to their pain level and budget.

The first thing we reach for when experiencing pains of any sort is the medication in pill form. Pain relief pills are good for temporary relief, but only on a short-term basis. Using pain pills on an extended basis will lead to further health problems. Instead of reaching for pain relief pills, consider checking into massage therapy. This is the most common of all the solutions, but it will be expensive if you don't have someone special willing to do it for you.

Alternative medicine such as acupuncture has become a popular choice as well. Acupuncture, or the science of putting pressure on certain points to inhibit different effects, has been shown to reduce back pains in real studies. Related is trigger point therapy, where devices may be used to massage deep-down tissues of the back by one's self or by the help of a partner.

A good alternative to investigate that is fairly inexpensive is to buy a special bedding or pillow unit. Special bedding that contours to the body of the sleeper has shown to decrease back pains dramatically. Special pillows can help alleviate pressure on certain parts of the body that would elicit back pains. Since these are usually one-time investments, they are good solutions to consider.

Taking a strong offense is sometimes the best defense a body has in repairing itself and protecting from damage. Try taking health therapy classes or getting plenty of aerobic exercise. Certain types of equipment such as an exercise ball can be purchased to carry out such plans on an extremely low budget. Of course, getting a gym membership and talking to a trainer would be the best solution if one is serious about exercising one's way out of a back pain problem.

Circulation is sometimes the answer to a back pain problem. An inversion table is one way to get circulation going without going forth with strenuous exercise. Inversion tables range in pricing, but are typically a couple of hundred dollars at least. Don't let this deter you, however, since they are long-term investments that can be used time and time again.

Closing Comments

If you have been experiencing back pains for a long period of time, it is probably a sign you should see a physician for a clear answer to your problem. It may mean you have a more serious issue that needs attention. When in doubt, go see the family doctor- being safe is better than being sorry. - 15266

Making the Most of the Microclimate in Your Garden

By Kristen Edward

A rough guide to the selection of suitable plants can be gained from observing what grows in similar conditions in the wild. In exposed places in Europe one often finds silver birch, mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia), pines (shrubby varieties are good on a roof), heathers and gorse. The trouble with any kind of wind break is that, although it lessens the wind pressure in one place, it may increase it elsewhere.

While in a hot climate a patio should be sited to catch a cooling breeze, in more exposed areas it should offer shelter from the wind. Design can be as basic as this.

Shade-loving plants tend to be the ones with relatively large leaves, since these become hotter than small leaves when exposed to sunlight. While plants and soil absorb heat from the sun during the day, at night they give off heat into the atmosphere. On cloudy nights, heat radiated from the ground is partly reflected back again, so that temperatures do not increase too rapidly. On clear winter nights, however, nearly all the heat is lost to space and the ground temperature falls rapidly until it is lower than that of the air. The soil then takes heat from the air at ground level, resulting in freezing.

The incidence of frost will be less under overhanging trees and covering the ground with materials such as straw or sacking will also help to reduce night-time heat loss. A free flow of air, ensuring that cooled air gets whipped away by the wind before its temperature drops too far, prevents the formation of frost pockets.

The lateness of late frost, for example, affects early planting, early sowing, fruit tree blossom, potatoes and the safe point at which to bed out dahlias and geraniums. At the other end of the season, it is a good thing to know when to take in plants which are not frost hardy.

By contrast, the design shown on the right holds the eye within the garden, with the pool and fountain creating an internal point of interest garden. So the curved bed (in the right foreground of the picture) has been kept deliberately low to allow a view through to the neighbouring garden and the trees. - 15266

Where do you stand on the Mountain Bikes and Kick Stand Debate?

By Alison Addy

When it comes to the use of mountain bike kick stands, many people are divided in their opinion of how they should be used. Firstly you need to understand that there is a big difference between using a kick stand on a mountain bike trail and using one in the street. Both sides of the debate on whether to use them or not are valid and it is important to look at both aspects to fully understand the situation.

Understanding the Argument

People who are against using a mountain bike kick stand are mainly against it for the safety aspect of things. When you think that the rough terrain could potentially knock the bolt which holds the kick stand in place and slip into the down position, you realize just how potentially dangerous that can be. If the rider was going downhill at fairly fast speeds, if the bolt were to come loose then a potentially serious accident could occur.

Those who want to use a kick stand claim that they do not want to leave the equipment lying around. If they leave it somewhere such as against a tree, they are worried that it could fall over and break. Also when riding over pavement alone, the kick stand should stay secure throughout. It is only over mountain bike trails where the problem truly begins.

Everybody has their own opinion on mountain bike kick stands. Some riders will have them whilst others would rather steer clear. It is a personal choice to make and many riders allow others to make their own minds up. However you will always come across people who have slightly stronger opinions. Many times people have been harassed by others because of their strong views on kick stands and unfortunately it is likely that you will always come up against some form of resistance with the issue.

If you do want to use a kick stand then you can purchase one which has two bolts to secure it rather than just the one. You can also do things to the lock nuts and lock washers to prevent them from becoming loose. So this does make it a little safer.

Overall the argument regarding kick stands will never fully be resolved. However, by becoming more knowledgeable about kick stands and the potential dangers of them you can help to make your own mind up about whether to use them or not. If you are just going to be riding over pavement then there is really no reason why you can't use kick stands. However over rougher terrain it is not always the best idea as it is potentially more dangerous.

How Much Food to Grow in Your Garden

By Stephen Cassandra

Most vegetables need a good depth of topsoil which is rich in humus and all need certain amount of space. They should be grown in some sort of rotation. A vegetable plot need not be screened, as is often suggested, for rows of neat vegetables can be attractive. Admittedly there are times in winter when they look straggly-hut a run of box edging should solve the problem.

A greenhouse naturally needs full sun, good access to it and preferably a hard surface area around it, as it soon becomes another centre of activity within the garden. if you can combine it with or site it next to the tool shed, or any other necessary small structure, so much the better. When wrongly sited, greenhouses can dominate the whole garden and, despite recent attempts to improve their appearance, they are seldom handsome structures. If the greenhouse cannot be a lean-to or an extension of the house, try to site the freestanding building, running east to west, to one side of the main view.

To give some indication of the amount of space which vegetables take up: an area of 84 sq m (300 sq ft) would provide a family of four with sufficient lettuces, runner beans, peas, carrots and turnips in summer, and with leeks, cabbages and sprouts in winter. But of course great pleasure can be obtained from growing your own produce, even if you do not have enough space to make the enterprise really economic, and the fresh taste of homegrown vegetables is reward in itself.

A space for any large vehicles to be parked, such as a boat or a caravan as well as a car, should be allowed for at this initial planning stage.

The fron garden should welcome your guests and provide safe and easy access to the door in all weather. Good lighting and a clearly visible house number are essential. The front garden will probably need to house several of the service items and you may want a parking space for one or more cars.

If possible, allow enough room not only to get out of the car without landing in a rose bed, but also to wash the car down; do not forget provision for a water point and for drainage. If there is not room to turn the car round, you will need to leave clear lines of vision for reversing out. - 15266

What is Chives?

By Timothy Tungsten

Garlic is native to the steppes of the Djungar and Kirghiz region of central Asia, from where the Mongols soon introduced it to China. It was also cultivated on a large scale in ancient Egypt.

They are frost-resistant and their leaves may be snipped the whole year long without affecting the plants in any way. However, they should be fed frequently and should not be cut too close to the ground so as to avoid damaging the growth centres. Chives may be propagated from seed, but home-growers usually increase them by splitting up older clumps and replanting the offsets, which gives earlier yields. The only requirement is plenty of light.

Chives should be freshly cut before serving. They have a very mild onion flavour without the biting quality and are used not only as a herb but also as a garnish on many cold and hot dishes. They should never be cooked - when used as a garnish for hot dishes chives should be sprinkled on top just before serving.

Dill is exceptionally good when combined with cream sauces and soups, cream cheese and butter, or with vinegar salad dressings. It is also used as a seasoning with raw vegetables, boiled meat and fish. A simple but tasty dish is boiled and buttered new potatoes or string beans with dill. As a rule it is not used with other herbs because of its distinctive aroma.

In order to have fresh dill in the garden the whole year round it should be sown in succession from March till late July. The leaves will be ready for picking within six weeks of sowing. Dill is an annual herb and plants sown in spring produce seeds in the autumn of the same year.

Dill may be stored for the winter by chopping the leaves and preserving them in salt or vinegar. It may also be dried, but this must be done rapidly and with care in an airy place at a temperature of not more than 30C (86F), otherwise the aromatic and extremely volatile essential oil will rapidly vaporize. This is also the reason why dill should be added to hot food just before serving. The dried herb should be stored in air-tight containers. - 15266

How To Grow A Beautiful Spider Plant

By Kent Higgins

A spider plant is a great choice for a houseplant. It is attractive and easy to take care of. It is possible to over or under water, but they are much more resilient than other plants. They also have a long life span.

The plants have long leaves that are narrow and come in other variations such as dark green with yellow striping, variegated, speckled and more. A spider plant will grow fast and produce a lot of foliage, which means they are a great choice for decorating. When they grow, they also tolerate being root bound quite well.

The watering requirements of the plant require a very small effort, however do not over water because it can cause root rot. A consistently moist soil with occasional dry periods is best recommended. Spider plants can go for several days without being watered, especially during the fall and winter, when they are less active.

If you see the tips are growing brown or become spotted, you need to change the kind of water you are using. If you have been using tap water, then it is okay depending where you live. If in the city, the water supply may have a high chlorine concentration and possibly fluorine as well. These minerals can damage your plant, so try using rainwater or purified water free of minerals to see if the problem will be alleviated.

Spider plants are flexible with light requirements, they do quite well in indirect sunlight, but can also handle direct and bright lights for several hours daily. The idea is to give them a few hours of light that is not in an area that is too hot or too cold. They can stand temps anywhere from 55-65 F, this is a part of their natural environment.

The plants are very easy about fertilizer requirements also, but it is important no to overdo it. A liquid NPK mix applied to the plant every three to four months is sufficient during the growing season. There is no need to do it in the fall or winter, that means generally they only get two or three feedings per year.

In the summer time, spider plants produce small, star shaped flowers that are white. The flowers grow along the stalk that can reach over three feet in length. If you notice the stalk is leaning or bending, it is a good idea to stake it. The plant may also bloom more than once and can develop flowers again in spring or early fall.

Spider plants make a beautiful hanging basket, particularly when they are older and have an abundance of leaves. They can grow out of a pot, so you need to divide and replant about every two years. Spider plants can reach a few feet wide and even apart from flower stalks, can get up to two feet in height. Caring for a healthy plant if done properly can help your Spider Plants grow so much it will crack a clay pot.

You can add a beautiful look to your indoor plant garden with this plant that is easy to take care of, you should try a spider plant. - 15266

Wet Suits And It's Importance

By Ed J Price

The wetsuit is the accessory that symbolizes today's scuba diving, along with fins and a tank. They have come a long way since their earlier days of suit pioneers like the O'Neill brothers and their Santa Cruz surf suits to being made from a combination of neoprene rubber and synthetic fabrics. Wetsuits today contain a combination of a wide variety of fabric weaves, designs, colors, and different types of material densities. There are loads of brands to choose from, each offering their own unique properties on one of the most important parts of the scuba divers outfit, especially if diving in temperate or moderately deep waters is planned.

History

Rubber skins were what the first wetsuits were made of. These were worn to keep in heat and protect the skin. They soon gave way to more advanced suits made of neoprene, whose cellular construction allowed air and water to be trapped allowing heating that was better than rubber. However, the early editions of neoprene had its downside. It became easy to tear and quite a struggle to put on. Often dressing required applying talcum powder to the inside of the suit. After several generations, breakthrough lines such as Sharkskin and Turtleskin brands added a layer of nylon sheeting to the inner suit and textured surface to increase strength and durability.

Combinations of Lycra and other synthetic materials replaced nylon sheeting in modern wetsuits. Brands such as Pinnacle Aquatics featured combinations of titanium weaves and natural Merino wool to increase durability, warmth and reduce odors. To protect sensitive spine and neck areas, and have reinforced knee and elbow pads to protect the diver against chafing against rocks and coral heads, these modern wetsuits used layers of thicker materials.

How It Works

There is one basic principle of the wetsuit; water flows into small pores of the neoprene foam of the suit where it is trapped, it is then warmed up by the body heat and energy of the diver. This layer of warm water then acts as a thermal suit by keeping the cold water from getting to the skin. Wetsuits are actually designed to let water come into contact with the skin, unlike the dry suits which are sealed to keep water out. When temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees, the average dive temperature, wetsuits are preferably used because there are hardly any intense temperatures for the body to be protected from. Dry suits are used for low exceedingly low temperatures to protect the body from potential freezing.

Wet Suit Types

There are many different types of wetsuits besides the well-known full suit. "Shorty" suits have full torsos, but do not cover the entire leg and arm areas. These suits are good for warm water conditions, where the main issue is maintaining body heat at greater depths. The "Farmer John" style (now less popular than in the late 80s when it was invented) has a thickened "pants" layer that goes up around the shoulders, but doesn't cover the arms; this type is good for surfing applications where knee protection is important. In addition, there are now specialized "thin suits" for competition swimming and light dive applications; these suits offer streamlining and abrasion protection more than they do temperature control.

Wetsuit Hoods

Over 25% of body heat is lost through the head; this is why hoods are a very important accessory to a full wetsuit. The same materials that make up the wetsuit are often used to make the hoods, but the hoods are thicker to prevent loss of heat around the head. To protect against a gush of cold water down the beck most hoods have long bibs that tuck within the neck of the wet suit.

Wetsuit Booties

Even though some wetsuits have integrated feet, most use separate booties that are drawn up over the legs of the wetsuit. These are usually corrugated and reinforced to allow divers to stand or push off against rough surfaces.

The Gloves

Another important addition is the Gloves. They must not only protect against cold water but must also stop sharp coral and rocks from damaging the skin. Diving gloves also have textured fingertips to help in handling gear or other objects during a dive.

Summing Up

Ever since its early primitive rubber casing days in the early 1950s, the wetsuit has come a long way. Wetsuits will continue advance and offer divers many new options for their diving experience with new materials and special computer-aided designs. - 15266

Dental Braces - Knowing more about it

By David Stogner

Dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, are used to fix the alignment of the teeth. The position of the teeth can also be fixed, but this depends on the individual's bite. The teeth problems that can be addressed through the use of the braces are overbites, underbites, open bites, and cross bites. The most common issue being resolved is crooked teeth. Other orthodontic tools are also used in order to properly shape the jaws and teeth. It is commonly used on teenagers and children.

How do braces work? Since teeth will only move when force is applied. The arch wire of the metal braces applies the force onto the teeth. This will help the teeth move to their proper position. During the monthly adjustment of the braces, the teeth are able to move by about a millimeter. But this will completely depend on the case of the individual. Other methods are also used that can affect how the teeth will move.

The most usual brace that is used is the traditional metal brace. It is usually made out of stainless steel, but sometimes nickel titanium is also combined with it. There are a lot of orthodontic suppliers that provide the traditional metal brace. Ligating brackets are used to reduce the friction between the bracket slot and the wire.

Clear braces: This is usually used as the alternative for metal braces because they will blend easily with the color of the teeth. The materials that are used for this kind are either plastic alloy or ceramic, but its function is pretty much the same with the stainless steel braces. White metal ties and clear elastic ties are usually used in combination with clear braces to make the device less noticeable. The friction is higher for this device as compared to metal braces which makes it more brittle and easily breaks. Due to this it is harder to remove the brace at the end of the treatment.

Lingual braces - This kind of brace is not visible because it is placed behind the teeth. This type is harder to adjust because the tongue can get in the way. A dentist must be trained in Lingual techniques before he is able to offer lingual braces.

Lingual braces are located behind the teeth. This looks better as compared to the traditional brace, but it is more difficult to adjust because it can affect the tongue's movement. A dentist must undergo training for lingual techniques before he can offer this kind of brace to patients.

Progressive clear retainers: This is sold in the market having the brand name of Invisalign. This is used to slowly position the teeth in their final places. This provides the same effect as the braces; the only difference is that they can be removed easily before eating. Though, this is not used for complicated teeth problems.

Shaped braces have a pad that can have different shapes such as round, heart, star, diamond and the like. While non-shaped braces only make use of a pad with a square shape. This kind of brace is provided by the WildSmile Brackets and it works the same as the non-shaped brackets. - 15266

Gardening Supplies

By Nancy T. Ferguson

Do you want to start a garden? Make sure you have all the right supplies first. What will happen if you start digging up your yard to start gardening and find out you don't have all the right supplies to continue? You will have a huge mess and an ugly yard until you get the tools.

In order to find out what supplies you need, go through the gardening process. The first step is the cultivate the land and prep the soil. To break up the soil you will need a tiller. A motorized tiller will work best to break up the soil. They are efficient machines but quite expensive.

If a tiller is just too expensive for you, you can use several other cheaper tools instead. A shovel is an absolute necessity. Especially if you have tough land, you will need a pickax to help you break up the grass and get through the large clumps. A garden hoe will help you with the remaining smaller clumps.

A garden hoe is a small tool that you can use to chop of the leftover chunks and break up the remaining grass and roots. A cultivator will help you by raking out the rocks and other chunks of stuff you don't want.

Once you are ready to start planting, you will need some smaller hand tools. A trowel is a small hand shovel and will be used very often for transplanting, removing weeds, etc. You can also get a hand size cultivator to use.

When your plants begin to grow, you will need to prune them every once and a while. Shears will work well for this especially for bushes. You can use them to keep bushes from over growing and keep them healthy.

Some other tools you may find useful include a hose, wheelbarrow, circle hoe, and fertilizers. You can use a watering can to water, but if you have a large garden, a hose will be much faster and more efficient.

A wheelbarrow isn't absolutely necessary, but you will find it very useful for yard work in general. A circle hoe can help you weed our garden because it can get in the smaller spaces. These tools can help you maintain a beautiful healthy garden. - 15266

Savory

By James Pollock

The elderberry is a shrub up to 7 m (23 ft high distributed throughout Europe, western Asia and North America. The white flowers, appearing in late spring - early summer, are followed by black fruits (nigra in Latin means black) - three-seeded berries, or rather drupes.

It is a biennial with large leaves and tall stems up to 1 m (3 ft) high, and a good plant for the herb garden because it is hardy and the leaves may be used throughout the winter when fresh herbs are scarce.

In Germany it is used mostly to flavour beans (hence the name Bohnenkraut) and in English and French cookery in stuffing for turkey and roast veal. It is also good with fish and pickled vegetables. The youngest terminal leaflets have the most delicate aroma and are delicious in salads. Savory is also used to flavour sausage meat.

Nowadays they are used to flavour compotes, jellies and jams. They may also be added to flaky pastry. The flowers or extracts prepared from the flowers are also used by the pharmaceutical industry in medicines that stimulate secretion of the sweat glands. The berries have a strong flavour and are used to make jams and juices rich in Vitamin C.

Summer savory is treated as an annual herb up to 30 cm (1 ft) high with stem that becomes woody at the base and branches like a shrub. The linear-lanceolate, short-stalked leaves are dotted on both sides with glands. The flowering period is from July until the frost; the fruits are nutlets.

It is very suitable for growing in the herb garden. Propagation is by means of seeds sown outdoors where the plants are to grow in early spring. The non-woody flowering top parts of the plant are gathered. These are tied in bunches and dried in a well-ventilated spot at a temperature not exceeding 35C (95F). They should then be stored in air-tight containers - 15266
