Gardening is not something that is new to me; however, it had been more than a dozen or so years since my last one. When stopping to ask myself why it had been so long it dawned on me that I just didn't seem to take the time. I would like to tell you that it was because I didn't have the time but it was clearly a choice.
Maybe it's my age but I realize that I appreciate what's happening out there in my backyard more than ever before. The peace that digging in dirt brings my way is something I just never thought about in the past. Concentrating 100% on planting, weeding and watering, then watching as the growth springs forth as I battle the pests that want to eat the same things I do. It echoes life.
I have fond memories from my childhood of being on my grandfather's farm and watching men and women work from sunup to sunset as they sweat for hours on end in the West Texas hot summer sun. Sometimes we were fortunate to work beside them and we learned quickly what hard work is. I still marvel at those who continue to work this way. It was a good lesson for me and my brother and it feels good to be back outside working hard toward a purpose; even if it's only for fresh vegetables throughout the year.
What you can learn through gardening if you let yourself can change your life and the lives of those around you. We have forgotten how to care about people and things in a world where we need to care about these things and we need them to care about us. Caring for your plants, you giving food and water is what allows the plants to give back to you in their bounty.
If you choose, you can garden on a year round basis. In most parts of the country you will need either a cold frame or a garden greenhouse of some kind. Most people recoup their investment in a couple of years if they choose to grow some of their own food. Statistically, many families are starting to do this all over the world.
Though we tend to blame what's happened on everybody else, you may want to take control over what you can so you don't have to depend on the government or anyone else for that matter. I like this approach. There are much greater benefits to controlling as much of your own destiny as you can then to sit by and let others control you. Being dependent on grocery stores and the prices they charge feels like the tail wags me. When I grow my own food, I wag the tail. - 15266
