Going on a family cruise with a young baby can be a wonderful trip. We know because we just came back from a Caribbean cruise with our 10 month old daughter.

Planning for your trip is essential. There are so many things to consder and travel with a baby means that you need to pack more than you would without a baby. Here are the things that we thing you absolutely have to have when going on a cruise with a young baby.

1. The most valuable thing that we took with us was our stroller. Our daughter loves being in the stroller and it was also great that our stroller folds - that way it was easy to take on an airplane, and it didn't take up much room in our cabin on the cruise ship. We used the stroller all the time. Every morning we walked our daughter on the promenade deck; we used the stroller every day to go to the ship's pools and dining rooms; we even used in the evening so that we can all enjoy the exciting evenings on board. Every evening after dinner we bathed our daughter, then put her in pyjamas, and then placed her back into her stroller. We then walked the ship with her, went to some clubs on the ship with her and before long she would fall fast asleep.

2. Make sure that you have enough diapers for your baby during the vacation - but don't bring them from home. First figure out before you leave how many diapers your child go through in a normal day - and then multiply that number by the number of days on your vacation. If your vacation involves air travel (like ours did) you won't want to have to bring the diapers from home - if you do that means that they will have to be checked as checked baggage. Instead, do what we did. Our ship cruised out of Fort Lauderdale in Florida. We had time from when our flight arrived in Florida to when we had to be on the ship. So from the airport we took a cab to a nearby Target store and purchased the diapers that we needed for the cruise and some other baby supplies before getting another taxi to the ship.

3. One thing to do on a cruise ship - especially when it is hot is to go to the kiddies pool with your child and cool off in the pool. In order for your child to go into the pool they have to wear swim diapers or they have to be toilet-trained.

4. If your baby is on formula make sure that you bring enough formula with you for the length of the cruise. We brought powdered formula since it is more compact than pre-mixed formula. Rather than bring it from home, we purchased the required formula in Florida before embarking our ship. Keep in mind that any formula entering the ship must be sealed & in the original container.

5. Kettle - taking a kettle (with an auto shutoff) on the trip means that you can boil water and know that you have safe water to mix with the powdered formula.

6. Formula dispenser - having a powder formula dispenser means that you can fill the bottles with clean water and when baby is ready to eat, you can just pour the pre-measured formula into the water and shake the bottle.

7. Not having a spot to put your dirty diapers will cause some problems with odor in your cabin on the ship. Let your room steward know that you will have some smelly diapers - he will come to your room more often to remove them. And we took with us scented bags for putting the dirty diapers. They really helped control the odors in our room, and they were also useful on our air flight. They can be purchased at a dollar store or Babies r Us.

8. Bring baby soap for your child's bath. Our cabin did not have a bathtub and most cruise cabins won't have one. What you can do is plug the drain on the shower and put enough water in the shower in order to give your baby their bath.

9. Sun Cabana - if your cruise is taking you to a warm climate like the Caribbean purchase a very lightweight sun cabana before your trip. You can use it when you visit the beach during the cruise. Keeps baby comfortable and protected from the sun. If you rent a cabana on the beach it will cost about $80 to $100.

10. Zip lock bags - these are great for everything - snack holders, put really dirty/soiled clothes away until you get home. Use for things that leak - (ex. medicine). Use the bags on the ship to pack bibs, spoons to go for dinner so when they are dirty you can throw in the bag & clean when you get back to your room.

Orchids Can Grow In The Window

Growing orchids is a fun, beautiful hobby and growing them in your home to enjoy is a great way to beautify any room. Orchids have a long history of symbolizing love and commitment. They require some special care, but growing them in your home requires only patience and love.

Before you plant your orchids, you should have a look at the windowsill. The window should have a more or less southern exposure. You will also need a humidity tray as orchids do not grow well in dry or overly hot conditions. It's a good idea to have a misting bottle on hand as well.

Begin with two or three orchids and good-sized pots to match, that will fit well inside the windowsill. Before you purchase the plants or bulbs, make sure you know whether they are sun-loving or not. Those that love the sun will need to be as close to the glass as possible with no obstructions so they can take full advantage of the daylight. Others can be further back or in a sill that is partially obscurred by a tree or another building if need be. Knowing what light conditions are right for your flowers will make the difference between beautiful and dead orchids.

If you have shade-loving orchids but the window is fully exposed, then try using a sheer curtain or lace to partially obscure the sunlight and filter it some. Gauzy, opaque curtains will also work. You can also purchase special window coverings that stick right on the glass and break up the sunlight before it enters, protecting your precious plants.

If the day is getting very hot, a small fan that blows just above the leaves can help keep the plants cool. Treat pests by wiping the leaves and stems of your plants with a cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol or sprinkle the plants with diatomaceous earth and wipe away a day or two later. Using insecticides indoors is not recommended.

When watering your orchids just like phalaenopsis orchids, keep in mind that they are happier being dry rather than wet. So don't soak them down too much. A little water more often is better than a lot of water only occasionally. Make sure you have draining pots so that the water does not linger too long and soak the moth orchid roots to rot. Use your misting sprayer to wet the leaves on hot days. Water in the morning so the sun will eventually dry the soil back out rather than the evenings when the water will soak in and stay.
