Making The Most Of Your Holiday - Things To Do In Rome

By Robert M Freeman

Rome, also known as the Eternal City is Italy's capital city. The city is well-known for the Vatican City, Sevel Hills, and La Dolce Vita. Rome is a striking city to come to, mostly because of its countless historic places that have led to Rome's Historic area being included in the World Heritage Sites.

The worst time to visit Rome is August, as for two weeks during August all the inhabitants leave the place for their own vacations, thus leaving most establishments closed. The weather is also really hot during this time, so it's best to visit the city during fall or spring. The best time to visit Rome is May; especially if you want to do lot of sightseeing, as all public landmarks are open to public without any charges for one week in May.

While in Rome, there are a number of historic places that you must visit. These consist of the Colosseum, where you should be prepared for a very lengthy queue, however if you plan ahead you can skip this. For this you can either reserve a spot on a tour or purchase a day pass for 10 Euro from the Roman Forum.

The Pantheon is an astounding work of architecture. It was erected as a temple for all the gods, and is renowned because of its exceptionally big dome. It is a working church, so do show respect, and inside it you will see signs of the former bronze ceiling which was melted down to create bombards to reinforce Castel Sant' Angelo. If you happen to be in Rome in the rainy season, make sure you visit the Pantheon to see rain falling through the open dome ceiling, as it is a distinctive and odd site.

The Roman Forum was the centre of the Roman government which was, once upon a time, the most influential government in the world. Admission to the forum is gratis, but it is extremely recommended you get an audio guide as it will improve your experience of standing at the centre of the Roman Empire.

When in Rome, make sure you see a few of the hundred churches in the city. The only thing to watch out for is your clothing as you will not be permitted to enter a majority of churches with naked midriffs, exposed shoulders, or uncovered knees. The greatest thing to do is to be dressed in pants or a long skirt, and make sure you are properly covered, as you will only be told you can't go into the church just when you are just about to enter after standing for hours in the queue to get the pass.. This is particularly true for Saint Peters church, but you may be able to locate a vendor selling shirts and pants right outside.

St. Peter is the home of the Pope. It is the seat of the Catholic Church, and is part of the Vatican. In addition, it is also supposed to be the most gorgeous and the vastest church in the world. There are extremely extensive queues, but it does not take that long for you to get in.

When in Rome, be ready to do lots of sightseeing, particularly for museums, churches, and historic places. It is a marvelous city, and certainly one that needs to be seen once in a lifetime. - 15266
