When you are ready to decide to heat your seed germination and plant propagation greenhouse make sure that the controls on your heaters are working properly this will pay dividends in the reduction of your heating costs
It does not matter if you have a cold frame or glasshouse you'll need to provide some form of protection during the cold winter months. Insulation material like bubble insulation allows you to cheaply protect your plants from frosts raising the temperature inside the greenhouse, although you will need a Heater to enable you to achieve temperatures high enough to protect tender plants.
Glasshouse Heaters
Always buy a good gas heater from a well known source that has been designed for safe and efficient operation in a moist greenhouse environment, otherwise you could kill your plants or cause an explosion from the fumes if the heater is faulty or has not been properly installed. Your plants will not only benefit from the extra heat, they can also from grow better with the CO2 which is given off from the all gas heaters.
Heaters that are suitable for heating greenhouses:
Propane Gas Heaters are very easy to install and run from the bottled gas. You should always read the instructions extra carefully.
Natural Gas Heaters, these run from your mains supply, providing a continuous and very reliable supply of heat. All natural gas heaters and appliances should be installed by a corgi registered fitter.
Electric glasshouse fan heaters are probably the easiest and most efficient way to provide heat for your glasshouse they will raise the temperature easily and efficiently, are designed for safe operation in the damp glasshouse environment. Most come ready to use, all you have to do is to plug the heater into your electric mains supply. The heat is very evenly distributed around the glasshouse by the fans. Another great advantage is they reduce the damping off disease as the air is constantly moving around in the glasshouse.
Paraffin Heaters, not as popular as they used to be due to the carbon monoxide fumes given off, these can be detrimental to your plants unless you give sufficient ventilation while to heater is in operation. You should only Blue Flame paraffin for your heater in a greenhouse and make sure the heater is well maintained.
You should on no account use any heaters designed for use in a domestic environment, these will not have the extra insulation models designed specifically for use in a humid environment will have.
When electricity is installed in your plant propagation and seed germination greenhouse it should always be installed by a qualified electrician as it needs to have its own fuse board and trip switch. When you are bringing the electric cable from your house make sure that it will carry enough electric current to provide sufficient electricity for all the appliances you intend to use e.g. electric propagators and more. - 15266
