How to Quickly and Easily Construct a Homemade Halloween Costume

By Brian Lehr

Let's face it, with the economy going the way it is, more and more families are searching for ways to save a few dollars here and there. And now, with the fall season upon us, we are approaching three main festivals that require the spending of money - halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Wouldn't it be great if we could get a few ideas to help us save some money during these times, instead of spending more?

Are you ready to save some money? It's easy. All you have to do is create your own homemade Halloween costume. This not only allows you to save tons of money, it also gives you the chance to have an awesome family activity. Go for it!

Now if you're like me, you're probably not the most creative person in the world. That's ok. Here's some great suggestions to help you start thinking about how you can make a very easy homemade Halloween costume.

Start digging through your clothes closet. Can you find an old dress? Contratulations! You've just found your Cinderella costume for your daughter. Came across an old suit and tie? Your son just became the newest computer geek on the block! Digging a little further may enable you to turn your child into a hippie or gypsy.

Grab a headband and a hot glue gun, and you're ready to put together a fun and simple costume. Start looking around the house for things you glue onto the headband. Look for small pieces of fabric such as lace and doilies. With a little creativity you can easily make a beautiful veil to go with her dress. And if you really want to spruce things up a little, add some small flowers.

A white sweatsuit can easily become a cow or Dalmatian. Simply take a Black Sharpie and draw spots onto the fabric. Then put a little black on your child's nose. (Add ears if you have time, using a headband and felt).

Got a large cardboard box laying around? Cut holes for your head and arms, and then create any number of costumes in minutes. For example, your child can be a TV - just take a black marker and draw a screen and some buttons onto the front. You can even take an old cord and glue it to the back of the box.

Here's another suggestion: after drawing computer screen to the front of a cardboard box, glue an old computer mouse on the top or to the side of the box. Or how about a washing machine? Cut open a piece of the box on the very front so that swings open and closed. Glue a piece of rope on to it for a handle. Go a step further and attach some kind of receptical (like a bag or pillow case) inside the box to receive all the candy that the people will put into your child's "washing machine"!

Homemade Halloween costumes are fun, exciting and don't cost a lot of money like buying your own. With a little imagination and supplies around the home, your son or daughter will have a costume to be proud of. - 15266
